The Czechs go Dutch

The Czechs go Dutch
Good news for lovers of Nature’s delights living in (or visiting) Czechia. As from New Year 2010, Czechs are legally allowed to possess up to 15 grammes of marijuana.

Justice Minister Daniela Kovarova based the law on the way the Czech courts currently handle drug related cases. After some time, Kovarova and Interior Minister Martin Pecina will have to see how and wether the new rules work.

The government also approved the list of hallucinogenic plants and mushrooms, including hemp, coca, mescaline cactus and magic mushrooms, and decided that people would be allowed to grow up to five pieces of such plants and keep 40 magic mushrooms at home.

Shortly after the list was made public, Czech cacti growers were concerned about the limits on the number of plants containing mescaline. They are going to hand over a petition to the government because they fear that, according to the new law that recognizes cacti as hallucinogenic substances, their activities would be considered illegal. There are some 4000 types of cacti in the world and several species can contain a certain amount of mescaline. Kovarova assured cacti growers that they would not be prosecuted, because growing plants for illegal drug production was already considered a crime by Czech law.

The new Penal Code took effect on January 1. It contains a special section on the growth of hemp and magic mushrooms.

Before, the tolerated amount of drugs in people's possession was defined by police and it was unclear what amount of drugs was punishable by law.

The new Czech law stipulates the maximum amount of drugs people are allowed to possess

Marijuana: 15 grammes
Hashish: 5 grammes
Magic mushrooms and other hallucinogenic mushrooms: 40 pieces
