Dutch Party wants to examine legalization of all drugs
AMSTERDAM – The Dutch party PvdA (social democrat party) wants an investigation into the legalization and regulation of all drugs. That puts Member of Parliament Lea Bouwmeester to NU.nl.She wants to examine under which conditions drugs can be offered legally. Among other things minimum age and quantities for use should be taken into consideration.
By that, the party goes a step further than during the cabinet Balkenende-4, when they pleaded for the regulation of the supply of soft drugs.
“The goal of this drug policy is to limit health damage and inconvenience, as well as the prevention of crime. If legalization can improve this, we should seriously investigate the option”, says Bouwmeester. “Maintaining the taboo will definitely not reduce the problems.”
Soft drugsIn addition, the PvdA wants to legalize all soft drugs. “In the future, coffee shops should be treated equally as an average bar.”
Last Tuesday, some Dutch politicians, under which VVD-celebrity Frits Bolkestein and former D66-leader Els Borst, argued the legalization of all drugs. According to them legalization can be the solution for chasing away drug gangs. Due to this, the work pressure on the police and the judicial authorities can decrease and the society may become safer.
EuropeAccording to Bouwmeester, legalizing drugs is not inconsistent with the Euopean rules. “It’s about interpreting a number of treaties, but if you can prove that legalization is not harmful to other countries, it is allowed.”
80% of the criminal Dutch weed culture is used for export. Therefore she considers it desirable to legalize on a European level. “If coffee shops become legal, it will be easier to regulate the supply and to tackle crime.” Bouwmeester warns that legalization may not lead to youngsters freely taking pills and smoking pot.
