Magic Mushroom Surprise
Timothy Leary, a psychedelic drug advocate, whose words "Turn on, tune in and drop"* out became world famous in the ‘60, was definitely onto something. That proves an American study that was held in 2006, also known as the John Hopkins experiment. The goal of the study was to explore whether psilocybin, the active ingredient of magic mushrooms, has a therapeutic effect on terminally ill people. Already in 1960, after having eaten magic mushroom for the first time, Leary was convinced of the therapeutic, spiritual and emotional benefits of psilocybin.
The 36 volunteers who participated in the study all suffered from psychological distress caused by cancer. After they received one dose of psilocybin, the world became a better place for them. And not just for a day or so. Apparently they are still feeling these positive effects 14 months later.
One of the participants says she experienced a kaleidoscope of colours, which mostly occurs at a rather low dose. At higher doses, hallucinatory effects tend to increase and the experiences people have are less related to the world outside, but even more to their inside. The effects are more spiritual and religious. Visuals, with the eyes open, also happen more frequently and they can be very detailed, however seldom to be confused with reality.
Although illegal in many countries, a new generation of researchers say that psychedelic drugs, such as magic mushrooms, can treat conditions such as addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder and cluster headaches.
