Drug submarine discovered in Ecuador
In the South-American jungle, the Ecuadorian police and the American DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) found a huge submarine that was developed especially for smuggling drugs to the US. The submarine, that is powered by diesel and batteries, was completely equipped with a periscope and an air conditioning system.
The vessel measured about 30 meters long and 9 meters high, which is large enough to store tons of cocaine.
The camouflage-painted submarine was discovered in the jungle on the Ecuadorian-Colombian border, close to a river that leads to the Pacific Ocean. It was hidden in an improvised shipyard. In the neighbourhood living quarters for at least 50 people were established. One person got arrested.
Serious developmentAccording to the police the vessel had yet to make a voyage. It’s not clear how far the sub could have gone, but the American coast should have been within reach.
Although submersibles were seized frequently in the past, American drug experts call this a serious development, because the vessel is so big and sophisticated. From now on they recommend the police to search actively for other drug submarines.
